About the ELMI

ELMI was created in 2001 to establish a unique communication network between European scientists working in the field of light microscopy and the manufacturers of their equipment.

Postdoc, ALMF, EMBL Heidelberg, Germany

The Advanced Light Microscopy Facility at EMBL Heidelberg (ALMF) offers a collection of state of the art equipment and image processing tools to support in-house scientists and visitors in using light microscopy methods for their research. In collaboration with other Core Facilities the ALMF also offers a service in correlative light and electron microscopy, spatial omics and high throughput chemical screens.

Your role

This post-doctoral position is a joint appointment with the Translational Lung Research Center and the group/ Advanced light Microscopy Facility of Dr. Rainer Pepperkok at EMBL. The candidate will be part of the EMBL Postdoctoral Program with access to training, mentorship and career development opportunities.

We are seeking a highly motivated light microscopy expert. (S)he will support and teach users both at ALMF and TLRC in advanced light microscopy techniques. This includes all aspects of assay development with respect to automated image acquisition, image data analysis and data management. Post holder will also write custom software packages that allow users to conduct experiments automatically and if necessary develop custom hardware in collaboration with the EMBL workshops and industrial partners. (S)he will also participate in the testing and establishing of cutting-edge microscopy technology equipment in collaboration with the industrial partners of the facility. Post holder will participate in the organization and teaching of international courses on advanced microscopy techniques.

You have

Candidates should have a PhD in either life sciences, physics or engineering. Advanced skills in widefield and confocal microscopy techniques are essential. Practical knowledge in image analysis and experience teaching microscopy or image analysis is expected. The successful candidate should be a team player and have good communication and organisational skills. Fluency in English is compulsory.

You might also have

Previous experience in one or more of the following microscopy techniques would be beneficial: Light-sheet, super-resolution, high-throughput microscopy, live cell imaging. Skills in cell culture and sample preparation would be advantageous. Experience with one or more of the programming languages Python, Java, LabView, Matlab, C++ would be appreciated.
