ELMI was created in 2001 to establish a unique communication network between European scientists working in the field of light microscopy and the manufacturers of their equipment.
Harvard Medical School is a world leader in biological and biomedical imaging, with an outstanding community of researchers developing and using cutting edge microscopy to push forward the boundaries of knowledge. These researchers image biological systems at length scales ranging from individual molecules to functioning brains and nervous systems, to entire model organisms, and with modalities acquiring data ranging from 2D static imaging to 3D, multiplexed timelapse volumetric imaging. The ongoing rapid improvements in imaging technology demand sophisticated computer vision methodology to quantitatively interpret the image data that is being acquired and to enable experimental design at new levels of sophistication and scale. While image analysis has been transformed through rapid progress in machine learning and computer vision, these advances are yet to impact how biomedical images are processed or acquired. Recognizing this critical need, HMS is establishing a new initiative in biomedical computer vision.
We are seeking a Director for this initiative who will work with investigators from the basic science departments at HMS, as well as the Harvard-affiliated hospitals, to create a new effort in cutting-edge biomedical image analysis. The Director, together with a team of research scientists, software engineers and trainees, will develop and provide state-of-the-art image analysis and related data analysis expertise. This group will build and engage the computer vision community through a postdoctoral fellows program, industry sabbatical visitors, Masters students, seminars, workshops, and courses. To recognize the substantial training component of this position, the Director will be proposed for a Lecturer appointment in the Department of Systems Biology, Harvard Medical School.
