ELMI was created in 2001 to establish a unique communication network between European scientists working in the field of light microscopy and the manufacturers of their equipment.
The need for computer vision in molecular life science research is rapidly growing due to an explosion in the use of spatially resolved measurement technologies across a wide range of scales, in combination with an increased demand for large-scale multivariate quantification of such datasets. The BioVisionCenter (BVC) is a recently launched new research center situated at the Irchel campus of the University of Zurich (UZH), co-founded by the UZH and the Friedrich Miescher Institute in Basel (FMI). Its mission is to become a worldwide leading research center for the promotion of comprehensive, scientific bioimage data exploration. Besides developing and implementing new technologies, the BVC will provide a computational platform as a service to its users that enables scalable bioimage analysis across multiple modalities and scales, from cryo-EM to whole organ imaging. As part of the launching phase, we are now seeking to fill two key positions.
The Head of Research and Development will lead the further development of the first computational platform of the center and build a community of users by adopting a heterogeneous ecosystem of image analysis tools developed across the large number of research groups at the participating institutions. In addition, she/he will be expected to participate in outreach activities to build strong ties with the national and international bioimage analysis and machine learning/AI community. She/he will report to the Managing Director (hiring in progress) and Scientific Director (tenured professor, in preparation), and work in a team with the Head Services (in preparation), and multiple systems administrators and software engineers and developers (some of which outsourced).
