About the ELMI

ELMI was created in 2001 to establish a unique communication network between European scientists working in the field of light microscopy and the manufacturers of their equipment.

PhD student positions in Biochemistry, University of Stockholm, Sweden

at the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics. Closing date: 22 February 2022.

The Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics (DBB) hosts several prominent research groups, whose interests span across cell biology, biochemistry, biophysics, theory and neuroscience, as well as cross-disciplinary collaborations across these areas. Several groups, many of them global leaders in their fields, study biological membranes and their protein components. Neurochemistry is currently the focus of strategic investments at DBB, including recruitments at the group leader level. Our facilities are primarily located within the Arrhenius laboratories at Stockholm University’s Frescati campus, together with other departments focussing on chemistry and biology. There is also a strong association with the Science for Life Laboratory, where several DBB groups are situated. Over 200 staff, including ca. 80 graduate students, are currently working at DBB. For more information about our department, please see: www.dbb.su.se.

Project description
Your studies in Biochemistry will be in the project: “Nuclear membrane proteins in chromatin organization, cell differentiation and cancer“.

The cell nucleus is surrounded by a nuclear membrane containing a large number of unique membrane proteins. The repertoire of nuclear membrane proteins varies during development and differentiation of different tissues. Nuclear membrane proteins play important roles in the organization of chromatin and control of gene expression. Disorganized chromatin is associated with aging and human diseases, such as cancer. The aim of the project is to identify and investigate nuclear membrane proteins involved in chromatin organization, using a combination of modern recombinant DNA techniques, cell culture, advanced microscopy and quantitative image analysis.

We are seeking candidates with a strong background in biochemistry. Priority will be given to applicants with prior experience in the above techniques (please include documentation).
