Postdoctoral Fellow – Correlative Imaging Technologies, EMBL Heidelberg, Germany

Job Description

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarter Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton near Cambridge (UK; EMBL-EBI), Monterotondo near Rome (Italy), and Barcelona (Spain).

The Ellenberg group in the Cell Biology & Biophysics Unit is looking for a postdoctoral fellow to study the dynamic organisation and structure of large macromolecular complexes, such as the nuclear pore or mitotic chromosomes. The Ellenberg lab is a multidisciplinary team consisting of biologists, chemists and physicists. The overall goal of our group is to systematically elucidate the mechanisms underlying cell division and nuclear organisation. We are developing a broad range of advanced fluorescence-based imaging technologies to assay the functions of the involved molecular machinery non-invasively, automate imaging to address all its molecular components, and computationally process image data to extract biochemical and biophysical parameters. Our research focuses on three areas: systems biology of mitosis, nuclear structure, and molecular mechanisms of meiosis and early embryonic mitosis).

Dependent on the candidate’s background and interest the successful applicant will apply and correlate advanced imaging technology ranging from live-cell confocal via super-resolution to cryo electron microscopy to unravel 3D organisation and structure as well as assembly and disassembly processes of the nuclear pore complex or chromosomal substructures. Work will further include development of labelling strategies, which could include genome-editing, in situ hybridisation, and DNA PAINT technology. The work will comprise technical as well as discovery aspects and will be carried out both independently and with internal and external collaborators.

Application deadline 15 July 2017.
