The Janelia Experimental Technology (jET) group is a team of engineers, scientists, machinists, and technicians that create new and novel instruments to facilitate the cutting edge research of Janelia. The jET group enables scientific research at Janelia by providing solutions to technical challenges that span a broad range of engineering and fabrication design spaces. Typical instruments are comprised of a wide range of custom designed optical, electro-mechanical, motion, machine vision, embedded software and electronic components.
About the Position:
jET is seeking a highly talented Senior Optical Engineer to join our team and to be a part of the unique Janelia experience. The person will work directly with researchers in the conceptualization and development of first-of-a-kind instruments and equipment to support original research. Successful candidates have a strong technical acuity and a track record of working in teams as well as individually to deliver results for difficult challenges. We seek people who can generate great ideas and deliver solutions based on them and those that are excited to work in Janelia’s highly collaborative and unique environment.
The Senior Optical Engineer is responsible for task and project level engineering activities designing, developing, and implementing a variety of simple to complex instruments and prototype systems supporting advancement of research at the Janelia campus. The Engineer must have strong knowledge of the engineering field’s basic concepts, practices, and procedures. The Senior Optical Engineer will plan, execute, and lead moderately to highly complicated projects and can architect systems to solve most technical challenges. Will work collaboratively with research customers and department colleagues and requires excellent customer service skills. The Senior Engineer mentors junior engineers, provides technical leadership of others, and may direct the work of others. The position reports to the Engineering Manager of the department.
