The BioImaging & Optics Platform (BIOP) at the School of Life Sciences of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) is offering a research position to extend the existing team as
Collaborator for microscopy in the BioImaging & Optics Platform (BIOP)
The BIOP enables and facilitates the access to state-of-the-art light microscopes for scientists within and outside the School. The idea is to support the research community and help to answer challenging (biological) questions by the use of modern light microscopes. The position is in the frame work of a research project with P. Bozzo in Rio de Janeiro and C. Dehio in Basel. It is about the investigation of how pathogens (e.g. Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Brucella) evade the host and innate immune response To gather insight into these dynamic processes, we aim to establish a microscope platform automation using existing equipment, to record molecular localization, molecular interaction and dynamics, based on single molecule localization microscopy. The implementation will allow to automatically analyze a large number of cells. Recently developed imaging techniques and microscope automation will be combined and allow for the first time to address dynamic aspects of the infection process at single molecule resolution, and at the same time provide sufficient data for statistic analysis and an integrated view in the cellular context.
The person filling this position will develop, optimize and validate the microscopy and image analysis workflow in collaboration with the project partners and the BIOP team. He/she is expected to have a PhD in a relevant field. A strong practical background in light microscopy and image processing connected to biological questions as well as knowledge in cell biology is an asset.
The applicant should be rigorous, reliable, well organized and have the flexibility needed for working in a multinational research context. The working place will be in Lausanne. Good communication skills in English and ability to operate as a team player in a multi-disciplinary environment are required.
Starting date : 01.04.2016 or later.
Duration : fixed-term contract of one years (renewable).
