ELMI was created in 2001 to establish a unique communication network between European scientists working in the field of light microscopy and the manufacturers of their equipment.
EMBL is Europe’s flagship laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation with more than 110 independent research groups and service teams covering the spectrum of molecular biology. Research at EMBL is supported by its core facilities, eight of which are currently located at EMBL Heidelberg. These core facilities provide practical tools, expert advice and service for life scientists.
EMBL is seeking a highly motivated imaging specialist to join our Mobile Services team. The new research theme Planetary Biology at EMBL studies life in context and aims to understand how microbes, plants and animals respond to each other and to their environment, from the molecular to the population level. To enable this research, EMBL will deploy Mobile laboratories on an expedition along the European coastlines. This flagship project named the Traversing European Coastline expedition will combine ocean exploration with parallel sampling of soil, sediment, shallow water, and selected model organisms in various habitats along the European coastline.
The mission of the newly formed Mobile Services team is to deploy cutting-edge technology and methodology in the field, amongst them, light and fluorescence microscopy, sample preparation for electron microscopy and flow cytometry. Throughout Europe, Mobile services will enable the TREC expedition, make technologies available to scientist from EMBL member states and engage with the public to communicate scientific approaches and findings along the route.
