Job description
We have an exciting opportunity for an interim Manager (18 months) at the Nikon Imaging Centre (NIC) at King’s College London.
Reporting to Associate Director, Core Facilities, the postholder will be responsible for all aspects of the operational management of the Centre, including financial oversight, people management, reporting, health and safety, equipment maintenance and business development.
The postholder will be responsible for the management, support and future development of the NIC with ongoing training and consultation with both King’s College London and Nikon staff. This includes providing expert guidance in experimental design and implementation, training for the users of the NIC and managing other NIC staff members. There will also be opportunities for the post holder to contribute actively to research both individually and in collaboration with academic staff.
This is a full-time post and will be offered on an 18-month contract
Key responsibilities
- Act as the primary contact for all users within the Nikon Imaging Centre (NIC).
- Ensure efficient running and utilisation of the NIC, dealing with a large number of different types of microscopy equipment including confocal, multiphoton, widefield and super-resolution.
- Provide training, advice and support to all users, assessing individual needs and providing the appropriate level of supervision.
- Provide technical expertise in microscopy experimental methods, including sample preparation, image acquisition and analysis.
- Operational management of the Centre, providing solutions to maximise efficiency in instrument usage and the management of facility resources.
- Work with the Academic Director and Associate Director of Core Facilities to define strategic priorities and explore opportunities for growth.
- Team management of two NIC staff, setting individual and team tasks and following best practice to ensure their individual needs are met.
- Oversee administration of the Centre, including resource management, instrument booking, financial and facility metrics reporting, ensuring efficiencies are identified and implemented.
- Oversee the IT administration of the Facility (network access, user access to NIC network storage).
- Responsible for regular maintenance and quality control of all NIC instruments.
- Keep up to date with new and emerging imaging technologies and advise in strategic purchase and/or placement of novel instrumentation.
- Liaising with Nikon UK, King’s Estates and Facilities and external service providers (e.g. engineers, constructors) to ensure the effective operation and maintenance of the Centre and minimise disruption to services.
- Represent and actively promote the Nikon Imaging Centre through engagement and networking with the light microscopy community, including internally at King’s, nationally and internationally.
- Building and identifying relationships for future collaborations, opportunities and potential sources of funds.
- Act as ambassador for the NIC@KIng’s, by participating in national or international meetings, and serving on committees or conference organising where appropriate.
- Develop communication materials to promote the facility, ensuring content is accurate and up to date. Presenting and sharing advances and developments at events, courses, workshops, conferences.
- Work with departmental Safety Manager to ensure the NIC operates in compliance with current guidelines and legislation. Ensure that all safety and operational procedures are followed by NIC staff and visitors and associated records are maintained, including clear communication of standards, protocols and guidelines.
- Be aware of the risks in the work environment and their potential impact on own work and that of others, adhere to any COSHH and Risk Assessment requirements and safe working practices.
- Set the standards of service and ensure overall quality is maintained, including mechanisms for reporting and collecting and reviewing feedback.
- Act as a committee member on the Nikon Imaging Centre Steering Committee, contributing to the strategic direction and development of the Facility.
- Where appropriate, contribute to funding applications and publications, (either as a PI, or Co-I) arising from work ongoing in the NIC.
- Work with colleagues on joint projects as required, analyse and interpret research data and draw conclusions on the outcomes. Write up or contribute to research work for publication where appropriate.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties that may be relevant to the role outline.
